Carpet tiles for schools and education

Education floors take more abuse per square metre than almost any other building type, on the tightest budgets and in the narrowest installation windows.

Carpet tiles for schools and education

Acoustics and BB93

Building Bulletin 93 sets acoustic performance standards for school buildings in England, covering reverberation time, indoor ambient noise and sound insulation between spaces. Flooring contributes principally to impact sound and reverberation control.

This is where the Tessera spread matters. Layout, Outline, Topology and Twine reach 27 dB; Struktur 1 reaches 17. In a classroom above a classroom, that difference is audible.

Overall BB93 compliance is assessed at room level, not from the floor finish alone — but the floor is one of the cheapest levers available.

Colour-coded wayfinding

Coding by key stage, department or wing is one of the cheapest effective wayfinding interventions in a school, and it works particularly well for younger pupils and for pupils with additional needs.

The constraint is palette depth. Layout and Teviot each carry 32 colourways, and Chroma carries 24 — enough to code an entire school from one product code, which keeps the O&M manual, the attic stock and the reordering simple for the next fifteen years.

For a more graphic approach, Outline's eight bold colourways are designed as accents against a Layout field, and Flotex Triad's 14 geometric colourways are built to be combined.

Where Flotex earns its place in a school

Three areas, and they are the three that cause the most maintenance grief:

  • Dining halls and canteens. Food, drink and several hundred children. Flotex is completely waterproof and can be washed rather than treated, drying in 4–6 hours.
  • Early years and nurseries. Spills are constant, and the Allergy UK Seal of Approval™ matters more in this age group than any other.
  • Corridors from external doors. Wet weather, wet feet, and a floor that has to be clean by morning.

Specify Tessera through classrooms, offices and libraries; Flotex where water is a certainty. That split costs less than specifying Flotex everywhere and performs better than specifying carpet tile everywhere.

Barrier matting is the highest-return decision

Every school is a machine for bringing mud indoors. A proper barrier zone at every external entrance protects everything behind it, and industry guidance puts the effective zone at a minimum of two strides in each direction of travel — more at a primary entrance in a British winter.

Forbo makes dedicated entrance matting systems (Coral and Nuway, the latter from its third UK plant at Telford) which sit outside the scope of this site but are worth asking about when you specify the main floor. The economics are blunt: a few square metres at the door protects hundreds of square metres behind it, and it is the line most often cut from a budget and most often regretted.

Installing in a half term

  • Survey early. Subfloor moisture and old adhesive residue turn a five-day job into a nine-day job. Find them in March, not in July.
  • Allow screed curing time. It cannot be compressed, whatever the programme says.
  • Phase by wing or floor where the window is genuinely too short, and sequence around the decant plan.
  • Order attic stock with the main order. Schools damage floors; matched replacement from the original batch is what keeps a corridor coherent in year eight.

DCTUK works to school holiday and half-term windows as standard, with a free survey within 72 hours and typically around 15 working days from first call to fitted floor.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best flooring for a school?

Usually a split: Tessera carpet tiles through classrooms, offices and libraries for acoustics and cost, and Flotex in dining halls, early years rooms and corridors from external doors, because those areas get wet and Flotex is washable.

Do carpet tiles meet BB93?

Flooring contributes to BB93 through impact sound reduction and reverberation control. Tessera ranges span 17–27 dB, so the choice within the range matters. Overall compliance is assessed at room level, not from the floor finish alone.

How many colours do I need for wayfinding?

Usually one base plus one per zone or key stage. Tessera Layout and Teviot carry 32 colourways each, so an entire school can be coded from one product code.

Is Flotex good for children with allergies?

Forbo states Flotex is the only textile flooring to hold the Allergy UK Seal of Approval™, because the upright fibre structure releases dust and allergens during vacuuming rather than trapping them.
